• Relating about actions and states:
  [noun, Nominative][verb] Marko govori 'Marko talks', [noun, Nominative][verb][noun, Accusative] Student čita knjigu 'The student reads a book', [noun, Nominative][verb][preposition][noun, Accusative] Profesor ide u Beograd 'The professor goes to Belgrade'.

• Expressing relations:
  [adjective, possessive][noun] Markova knjiga 'Mark'o book', [noun][preposition][noun, Accusative] put u Zagreb 'trip to Zagreb'

• Expressing time:
  Asking about the time: Koliko je sati? or Koliko ima sati? 'What is the time?'
  Telling time: [number, hour] i [number, minute] deset i petnaest 'fifteen after ten', [number, minute] do [number, hour] petnaest do deset 'fifteen to ten', pola [number, next hour] pola dva 'half past one',
  The 24 hour clock, along with the [number, hour] i [number, minute] pattern, is used formally for all times. In informal communication, a 12 hour clock is used with the [number, hour] i [number, minute] pattern from the minute 1 to the minute 29, and the [number, minute] do [number, hour] for minutes 31 to 59 (called 29 to 1 to the hour).

• Quantifying:
